Ranking All The LGBTQIA+ Books I Own ft. Lots of Love, Screams, and Rants

I own a lot of books.

It makes me REALLY happy to look at my bookshelf.. is that weird? Anyway, I do, and I also happen to own a lot of queer books.

Screen Shot 2020-05-25 at 6.07.31 PM

I wish I owned more/a better ratio but if I did this post couldn’t happen so maybe it’s a good thing? I’m clutching at straws here. Anyway, there’s enough to make one (originally two part but i made it one really long one!! – 2.2k wOW) massive post where I rank them all – from favourite to least favourite. I haven’t seen anyone else do this at the time of writing, but if you have, link it below!!

0BFB3124-F47F-46A2-BE43-D67A7BC8AF0Cthe raven king

This is the culmination of the VERY gay ship in this series, AND it’s like my favourite series ever so why would this not be at the top of my list??? I just love Ronan and Adam so much and the scenes are everything.

37506437darius the great is not okay

I’m counting this as a queer book because Darius has a boyfriend in book 2!!!! I can include it!!! You all have probably heard me scream/cry about how much this book means to me, but here I go again, talking my head off about it.

C4A15045-2F3A-4D1D-B583-F032F978A3EAautoboyography

Everyone knows how much I love this book, so it’s no surprise it’s up there in my top three. Tanner and Seb’s relationship is so beautiful, but the thing I probably love the most about it is how it isn’t wholly romantic. They’re friends in such a pure way – supporting and loving each other unconditionally.

041A1C87-3ACD-4048-B120-9B5B2AE46F66aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe

This book is gay and sad and somehow I love it so much?? It makes me cry but do I care? No.

Anyone who hasn’t read this… I’m sorry but you may have to leave. Just to read it, and then come straight (hehe i’m hilarious!!) back. It’s such a wonderful book that talks about everything and nothing all at once. (I also reviewed it here which… I never do.)

1176AF81-7924-44D7-AB0D-D098CBE1C5B1crooked kingdom

I love my soft demo expert who blushes so many shades of pink!!! I love my guy Jesper who just flirts non stop and I love them together!!!

Look the main focus of this is DEFINITELY not the gay romance but. It is a pretty good part. I love so many things about the ship including: the Piano scene, the Bomb scene, and the Flushes Bright Pink scene (aka, she’s-part-of-the-gang-tattoo scene. it never fails to make ME blush too. wylan u got urself a good  guy there.).

41150487._SY475_red white and royal blue

Meet Alex: chaotic disaster bi who is kind of oblivious?? And Henry: meeting some nice animals in Narnia. Not really but…. please tell me we all know what I mean.

There are so many iconic things in this book – the powerpoint, the flies-halfway-across-the-world-for-you, but what I love so much is the witty banter. The back and forth gives me LIFE, and it was the reason I couldn’t stop smiling and yes, laughing, throughout this.

35960813final draft

This book’s romance is marvellously slowburn and I hate and love it. Laila and the LI are perfect together and I love this book so much!!!

I relate to so much of this book – significantly less than I used to however. Even though I have precisely 0% of a clue what it’s about 0.2 seconds after finishing it, I still love it so much and everyone should try and get to it!!

69753C67-1A4A-4016-AAA3-14B0F73BB6C7the gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue

This book!!! I love the adventure around 1800s Europe and I love Monty even more!!! The scandals and ridiculous antics everyone gets up to in boats and on land and in caves are hilarious and I love it so much!!!

The third book is coming out in August too and if it’s as good as Felicity’s book I will cry because aLL I WANTED WAS A DECENT SEQUEL

31373184call down the hawk

I’m so in love with the Lynch brothers it’s not even funny anymore!!! (Almost as much as I’m in love with Renee Walker and Andrew Minyard <3) And the face that we get an entire spin off about them?? PRICELESS.

When I first read TRC my favourite was Ronan and then this happened!! I loved this book A Lot so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

39897058the fever king

I remember almost nothing about this?? At the time of writing this I’ve only read it once but I’m planning to change that this June!!! I do remember, however, my snarky sarcastic Noah and Dara!!! I love them so much my heart :’) I cannot wait to read The Electric Heir soon ❤

35CA009C-D3EB-4D44-961B-EE0102032A33i wish you all the best

THIS BOOK!!! It will make you cry and Feel Things and aah I still can’t believe what a gift this is to the world!!

I read it last December and trust me when I say it’s a life changer. It meant so much to me and if you read it you won’t regret it. (update I’ve reread it since then I cried I laughed I love them so much)

BE56055B-77D7-4805-A5FD-48F0268C3B61summer bird blue

I cried so much during this and I don’t have a sibling. The depictions of grief and how it can consume you, or just trip up in subtle ways – it hurts. It hurts so much. It means so much to me for that reason because of…. Reasons, but no matter the tears, I would read this a million times over. It is such a glorious novel with gorgeous prose and I fell hard for Rumi and her journey.

50286296._SY475_only mostly devastated

I’m actually so surprised this is so far down on the list but it is!!

I love Ollie, Will, the families, the friends… everyone in this book. The plot was fluffy but definitely moments were more serious – and it made me laugh so much guys. It’s cute and just what I’d recommend during COVID-19 to smile!!!

33295690._SY475_dress codes for small towns

I have been talking about this book so much lately and I’m not sure why! It’s such a beautifully told story about finding out who you are and finding out about the world but I feel not many people have read it which is SUCH a shame. I love Billie and the Hexagon so much ❤

74C40E50-445F-4B2E-9861-93855D825054heartstopper

This!! I love Heartstopper with all my heart and it says a lot about all the other books that it’s all the way down here. I adore Alice Oseman’s writing and this was actually the first thing I read from her. The story is character driven – so I automatically love it – and the themes and messages woven throughout are so important. Even though it being down here means I don’t love it as much, it still means a lot to me and I can’t think of a better book to close the first half on.

33299465you asked for perfect

I honestly don’t know WHY this is so far down?? Like, it’s a beautiful story that will, yes, get you very stressed but I do love it so much!!

Ariel and Amir’s friendship and eventual romance is just so pure and aah I love them!! I also love the sisters and family because!! Matchmaking!!

1garrett girlsthe last summer of garrett girls

This book!! It has pretty minor lesbian rep but I’m including it because it makes the numbers good 🙂

One thing I adore about this are the shirts they all wear!! They sound so good and if I ever saw someone wearing one I would probably die of excitement.

36307634._SY475_king of scars

Look…. this was great. I loved it A LOT except for that trope at the end!! AND we didn’t get enough Nina content for my liking I said what I said!!!

I’m still in awe of the plot line in this for some reason though?? AND NIKOLAI I CANT EVEN WITH HIM

B168FD27-DBF1-4F60-AE95-889E151F4537what if it’s us

I haven’t read this since last Pride (i’m writing this in May heh) but I do remember it being good!! It was one of the first queer books I read actually and I love Ben and…. Adam? so much. I KNOW IT STARTED WITH AN A

35901105the brightsiders

This book was a fluffy romcom that I read at the perfect time!! I read it for Pride last year, and if you’re looking for a short and sweet read I’d definitely recommend checking it out.

38897636full disclosure

I liked this a lot!! The characters and everything… something felt a little off I guess at times but I know so many people love it and I can totally see why – it just wasn’t ‘right’ for me. (but it still got a four star rating so make of that what you will)(also!! Black and queer rep!! Black author!! please support during this time!! i ordered some books 🙂 support any way you can)

44281034the gravity of us

Now is where we get into the less good books?? There wasn’t anything WRONG with this exactly but it just didn’t click amazingly with me. It was fun though!! I just didn’t really get some of the character motives and a couple of them annoyed me so much because they were really selfish and they never even considered the consequences??? If you’ve read this you’ll know the one massive thing that was just an idiotic thing and I feel like it as designed to make us feel bad for him but all it did was annoy me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

889D2308-46B1-434A-8321-E50EF7EA6583leah on the off beat

Once again – really sweet, but I had major issues with Leah and some of the things she says in this!!! I get it but at the same time… why would you even say that?? She was a jerk to Abby, her mum, to her friends – honestly why she got a decent ending I still don’t know.

44017627wayward son

Once again, there’s nothing wrong with this exactly (except for the beef I/a lot of people have with rainbow rowell!!! and j.k. rowling but this post isn’t about that) but even though I liked it more than the first book looking back the plot lines were a mess, the WINGS annoyed me so much, and the only memorable thing about it was the fair scene??

THE WINGS aka the devil’s handiwork. WHAT EVEN ARE THEY except a useless plot device?? They seem like they’re meant to be a ‘handicap’ but it’s written so badly?? I can’t even describe how much I hate them?? (Also they are blue on this cover but they’re described as red?? Confused??)

40801157._SY475_the miseducation of cameron post

I watched the movie of this recently and it was good!! My friends and I were VERY mad in parts at certain things but the book was not so great? I feel like some scenes could’ve gotten much more emotional rather than just stating facts?? Because of this it felt very stilted and I wasn’t connected as much as I could have been. The book also has a lot more backstory than the film which wasn’t that good? I didn’t love it?

39848512odd one out

In this everybody is in love with everybody – like TRC, but everyone is ROMANTICALLY in love with everybody. There was so much potential.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. It felt good immediately after reading, but as I think about it more it was messy, pretty trash writing, and I would feel ripped off if I paid more than $5 for it (spoiler – I paid $5 for it). It could’ve been good depending on the direction it went in but the way it ended up going was not so great. I have heard very positive things about other Nic Stone books though so I should maybe try those!!

(Also I don’t know why I’m so mad about this when it was actually okay?? I gave it 3 stars??)

46131775._SY475_carry on

This was not the MOST awful thing in the world? It wasn’t as amazing as I used to think it was but it’s better than some other books? (also it’s one of the first books with gay rep i read if i reread it now my rating would likely be lower)

I pitch this everytime as Draco x Harry from Harry Potter and that’s kind of all I have to say about it. Maybe read it???

28003097georgia peaches and other forbidden fruit

I don’t know what to say about this except it was one of the first queer books I read and so I had low expectations that were met?? I thought it was amazing and revolutionary at the time….. past Rhi what were you even thinking.

This book kinda sucked a lot. I’ve only read it once because I’m worried it’ll be even WORSE than what I think it is but.. should I give it another go? It feels like a horrible copy of better books and just… I’d recommend a thousand other books before this one. The one thing I do LOVE is the title and how it’s a play on words ❤

23058402the art of being normal

I feel horrible putting this SO LOW since it’s one of the only books with trans rep I’ve ever really read, and it’s the only one I own (wait no IWYATB) but it just didn’t work for me??

The last time I read it, admittedly, was a couple of years ago, but it just didn’t work with me for so many reasons: the family, the MC, the friends, the plot, the everything.

Screen Shot 2020-05-23 at 9.38.16 AM

how did you enjoy any of these books? should i give some of these a second go? do you own the right amount of books to do this or is it a larger/smaller number? have you done this?

also by the time this goes out my aftg book series came…. so i guess i’ll place that above gentleman’s guide somewhere?? i don’t know where exactly though?? THIS WAS HARD

  2. A Gentleman’s Guide has my heart! I read it a few weeks ago, and now I’m on the sequel. Got under a day to read it before its due… didn’t time that well XD Wish me luck! x

      1. It’s always the case, apart from SOC, that sequels are a let down. I’ll have to research the author and see what those… not good things are? Thank you for letting me know 🥰

        Liked by 1 person

    1. ah yes – i’m only going to be from now on since i used to rec it quite a lot but i can’t delete all that content (a; content deletion, b; finding all the mentions!) so from now on i’m not going to talk about it a much :)) thank you for commenting mel!

  3. I’ve read 3 books on this list – Crooked Kingdom YES, What If It’s Us (cute but hated the ending, also omg what was the second guys name?? I want to say Alex but I think that’s wrong) and Carry On (which was a no from me). But that’s terrible because I really want to read literally 90% of these books!! Especially You Asked For Perfect, RW&RB, Only Mostly Devastated, Gentleman’s Guide, Leah On The Offbeat (heard mixed reviews but I do want to read it before Love Creekwood(!!), Darius The Great & I Wish You All The Best!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. aah i agree, CK was th only truly incredible book out of those three… but i hope you get to read more soon!! (love, creekwood comes out TOMORROW i’m THRILLED) ou of those books i’d say Darius, IWYATB, and RW&RB are the three I adore with all my heart, but I like them all!! (I’m wary of recommending Gentleman’s Guide too much now since Mackenzi Lee…) And Leah is great, but there was one part that annoyed me a lot and it’s kinda biphobic so be warned!! ❤ thank you for commenting emme, sorry this got so long!!!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Wait what tomorrow?! I thought it was being released later than that – that’s so exciting!
And that sucks about the Leah & Gentleman (I hadn’t heard anything about that?!). I’m kind of hesitant to read Leah tbh. I had heard briefly about the biphobic content & that Leah is really annoying so like I don’t want to read it that much? But also I feel like because it’s essentially a series I feel like I need to before Love, Creekwood?? I’m so torn.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. it’s today in australia!!
read leah if you can as i think love creekwood would definitely spoil some of it but read it KNOWING that it can be a tad annoying and problematic !!! (and i don’t know much about the mackenzi lee thing either, just bits and pieces about her misgendering and deadnaming a trans character on the blurb of her book, and signing books by POC authors but i don’t know the full thing!!)

          Liked by 1 person

          1. lucky!! i just had a look and its not until july 23rd in the UK :// at least that gives me time to read Leah – and I’ll definitely go in with that in mind, thank you! And oh gosh that’s not good. Will probably avoid those ones then – thanks for letting me know.

  4. I obviously knew this post was going to be amazing before I even clicked it on because you’re Rhi and I love all your posts, but this was only solidified when I saw that The Raven King was ranked first on your list. :,)

This list is beyond stellar!! (Omg you have me fangirling over Jesper and Wylan again I majorly need to reread SoC and CK.) I want to read Final Draft!! There are so many lovely books on this list and I was nodding along the whole time. Amazing post!!💛

    1. ‘because you’re Rhi and I love all your posts’ OLIVIA WHO MADE YOU THIS KIND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH (and yes. that was a power move on my part ;))

Let me know if you reread and I would MORE than happy to scream along and maybe reread with you ❤ I miss the crew so much. Aah I hope you love Final Draft because it's simply amazing and quite underrated!! Thank you so much <33 xx

  5. Omg, you are literally the FIRST person I’ve seen who has said that we needed more Nina in King of Scars, and I completely agree!! So many people hated her in that book, but I liked her arc and honestly wanted to see more of it! And I also wasn’t the biggest fan of The Gravity of Us. There were some minor things that bugged me just in relation to the accuracy of the whole NASA bit and the way the author wrote NYC, but also the part you mentioned, I was definitely not a fan of. Loved this post, it was so cute!

  6. This is such an amazing post for the current situation – thank you for sharing these #pride recommendations. [I’ve actually realized that my reading habits aren’t very diverse so I’ll be 100% picking up some of the books on this list!]. I’ve actually always wanted to read What If It’s Us because I’m a MAJOR thespian and Broadway nerd. The Last Summer of Garrett Girls looks so summery and fun too – LOVE the cover! Beautiful post, Rhi! 💙

  7. Great Post! 😊 I just recently read Darius the Great Is Not Okay after seeing so many positive reviews and it was amazing! I’m honestly so excited that we’re getting a sequel and follow along Darius again 🥰 I also love Noam and Dara from the Fever King and the sequel was amazing as well, so I hope that you end up liking it 😄

  8. Oo I love this idea! It’s so fun 🤩 I read quite a few of these, and I’m glad that so many of my favorites made it to the top (Crooked Kingdom, Summer Bird Blue, You Asked for Perfect)! Also, I’m so glad to see you read The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls because I have not seen anyone else read it on here, but I thought it was such a great read!!

  9. Ah the piano scene in Crooked Kingdom was everything!! I recently got Carry On Simon from the library after reading Fangirl and I am looking forward to reading it but not as excited as I’d thought I’d be… eek! Looking at my bookshelves makes me happy too! There’s something so calming about books though, like even when they are in a room they change the atmosphere 💖 I’m currently reading The Hate U Give and struggling, a lot. I think it might take me a while to get my head around the way of writing but have you read it? Is it just me that is having trouble with it? 😭

      1. Thank you! Good to know! I’m glad it’s not just me I think I’m starting to get with it hopefully, it’s so upsetting though and honestly it’s awful what is happening in it! But I do feel like it’s given me a better insight 🙂

    1. it was written while aftg was in the mail being delivered to my house where it currently resides. OF COURSE IT WOULD TOP IT I’M TOO OBSESSED TO GIVE ANYTHING ELSE THE FIRST PLACE SPOT

thank you very much, i have worked hard for it (aka, told my family to get me nothing else but book vouchers for years)

  10. Ah, I love this and basically love all the books you’ve mentioned!

I loved Carry On when I first read it last year (I was OBSESSED) but I’m seeing that it could be slightly problematic and rethinking how much I want to support it.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy Only Mostly Devastated, but glad that you did ❤

I finally read Ari & Dante earlier this year and… EMOTIONS! Very much excited about the sequel omggggg. And now I need to read Darius *insert heart eyes* Same goes for RW&RB (which I recently reread and will forever love). We also have endless love for Nick & Charlie.

The Fever King is glaring at me from my tbr I MUST READ.

    1. ahh thank you so much!!!

i’m not mentioning it to support anymore (same with harry potter, but i never mentioned that anyway haha) have you read the sequel?

aw, i really loved it so that makes me sad to hear!! was there something in particular you didn’t like or just a general meh vibe (which… is def me some of the time haha)

kajhdfkjds i love ari and dante!!! and omg darius is simply amazing, i hope you can pick it up soon before the sequel to that comes out in august!! alex and henry make me so happy, and so do nick and charlie :))
